Hippies

Woodstock

Hippies rejected the conventions and thoughts of modern society. They sought to build a utopia free from order and rationality. To oppose modern conformity, hippies wore long hair, dressed in thrifty clothing and boots, used drugs and moved away from home to join communes. These communes were crowded communities in which they shared everything (and yes everything was shared).

These communities suffered from crime, and extreme drug use. Many deaths occurred from overdoses. Hippies developed a unique fashion and music. They protested war, nuclear weapons, and pollution among other things. Ultimately, people grew up and moved on, or they lost sight of the goal: the hippie movement failed.
